What makes a good photograph?

A good photograph is one which evokes an emotional response. Getting such a response is often more difficult in landscape photography than in news photography or wildlife photography or documentary photography.

Making a good landscape photograph first requires finding a compelling perspective of an interesting subject.  Perhaps even more important, when the medium is black and white film, is being there to snap the shutter at that moment when the light becomes evanescent.  In a black and white photograph, there is only the subject, the perspective and the light. There is no color. In black and white landscapes it is ultimately the light that evokes the viewer's emotional response.
